Bob Dylan, born Robert Allen Zimmerman on May 24, 1941, in Duluth, Minnesota, is an American singer-songwriter, author, and visual artist who has been a major figure in popular culture for over five decades. Regarded as one of the most influential songwriters of all time, his musical reputation sometimes supersedes his other artistic endeavours, but Dylan’s paintings and prints of all-American urban and rural landscapes and interiors are just as vibrant, lyrical and poetic as his songs.

He briefly attended the University of Minnesota before dropping out and moving to New York City in 1961. There, he immersed himself in the Greenwich Village folk scene, gravitating toward the works of Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams, and Robert Johnson. Dylan's eponymous debut album, released in 1962, showcased his talent for interpreting traditional folk songs and blues standards.
Dylan's second album, “The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan” (1963), marked a significant departure from his debut, as it featured mostly original songs that underscored his gift for introspective and politically charged lyrics. Songs like Blowin' in the Wind and A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall established Dylan as the voice of a generation and catapulted him into the forefront of the civil rights and anti-war movements. Following a near-fatal motorcycle accident in 1966, Dylan retreated from the public eye and focused on his family life in Woodstock, New York. However, he continued to record and released the influential albums “John Wesley Harding” (1967) and “Nashville Skyline” (1969), which saw him delving into a country-infused sound. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Dylan's musical output remained eclectic, exploring various genres and themes, including a deep dive into Christianity with his “gospel trilogy” of albums – “Slow Train Coming” (1979), “Saved” (1980), and “Shot of Love” (1981).
Dylan's career experienced a resurgence in the late 1990s with the release of the critically acclaimed album “Time Out of Mind” (1997), which won three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.
