Andre Butzer emerged in the late 1990s as a significant figure in the Contemporary German art scene. His work, deeply influenced by German Expressionism and popular culture, is defined by artificially exaggerated realities. Butzer's artistic journey began in Stuttgart, where he was born, and has taken him through various phases of exploration.
Butzer's early works displayed a clear influence from artists such as Albert Oehlen, while also drawing inspiration from the colour palette of Edvard Munch and the dense, bright compositions of Asger Jorn. This amalgamation of influences helped shape Butzer's artistic voice, which he has continued to refine throughout his career.
The artist's oeuvre is characterised by large-scale canvases covered with thickly-applied paint, often featuring cartoon-like characters and objects. This distinctive style has earned Butzer recognition as one of Germany's most sought-after contemporary artists, with his works appearing in solo exhibitions at Galerie Max Hetzler in Berlin, Galerie Christine Mayer in Munich, and Patrick Painter in Santa Monica.
Butzer's artistic career gained momentum in the early 2000s, marked by his participation in the exhibition Akademie Isotrop at Künstlerhaus Stuttgart in 1997.
In the early stages of his career, Butzer created a visual universe centred around the fictitious world called Nasaheim. This concept allowed him to explore themes of life, death, consumption, and mass entertainment through his art. His wide-ranging influences included Friedrich Hölderlin, Walt Disney, and Henry Ford.
Butzer's work has evolved significantly over time. His early figurative works, combining styles of cartoons and high culture, gradually gave way to more abstract colour-field works and his renowned N-Paintings.
Throughout his career, Butzer has exhibited extensively in Germany and internationally. Notable solo exhibitions include those at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid in 2023 and the YUZ Museum in Shanghai in 2020-21. His works have also been featured in galleries including the Saatchi Gallery in London and the Art Institute of Chicago, cementing his status as a prominent figure in Contemporary Art.
