Meaning & Analysis

The print was inspired by Warhol’s trip to Stockholm on December 7th 1967 and the flight information can be seen in blue writing beneath the black doodles. The blue writing contrasts with the yellow background which makes the text difficult to read. The print was published for an exhibition in Stockholm at the Moderna Museet. The exhibition also travelled to the Netherlands, Switzerland and Norway and was very popular.

Warhol is famous for elevating everyday objects and making them into art. The artist created prints of Campbell’s Soup Cans which were highly sought after on the fine art market and SAS Passenger Ticket (F. & S. II.20) is a good example of how Warhol is able to take a seemingly mundane object, a plane ticket, and make it into a great work of art.

  • Andy Warhol was a leading figure of the Pop Art movement and is often considered the father of Pop Art. Born in 1928, Warhol allowed cultural references of the 20th century to drive his work. From the depiction of glamorous public figures, such as Marilyn Monroe, to the everyday Campbell’s Soup Can, the artist challenged what was considered art by blurring the boundaries between high art and mass consumerism. Warhol's preferred screen printing technique further reiterated his obsession with mass culture, enabling art to be seen as somewhat of a commodity through the reproduced images in multiple colour ways.
