Suffer Love II is a 2009 etching by Tracey Emin released in an edition of 250. At the centre of a white background, Emin captured her nude form in blue ink in the midst of masturbation. Around the sketchy figure there are thicker daubs of the blue ink, suggesting Emin’s spontaneous and speedy approach to her printmaking process.
This sexually charged etching formed part of Emin’s White Cube exhibition Those Who Suffer Love. This particular work formed part of an animation of similar prints, which when played together brought to life the act of masturbation caught in each etching. When asked about her inspiration for the exhibition in an interview, Emin lamented that she felt “like I’m losing a lot of my sexual energy, or it doesn’t matter to me … I’m really frightened about this because sex is always what has gotten me up in the morning”. Through the exhibition in its entirety and works like Suffer Love II, Emin works through this fear by celebrating the sexual energy that has guided her through life.
