Meaning & Analysis

This intimate reclining nude showcases Emin’s unrelenting study of her own nude form. The bed, liking Emin’s most recognisable and iconic subject, is delineated here in a few fluid lines. A dramatic wash of black ink concentrates the viewer’s attention to the nude at the centre of the composition. As is typical of her Nude Self-Portraits, Emin has scrawled out her own face. Of primary importance to her and this work is the appearance of her feminine form, and the ever-changing way in which Emin viewers her body and the sexual energy it emits.
