Biography

Born in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1967, Tal R moved to Denmark with his family at a young age. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, graduating in 2000. Tal R's unique artistic style, which he terms “kolbojnik” (meaning “leftovers” in Hebrew), draws from a wide range of influences, including Fauvism, Expressionism, and Outsider Art.

Spanning painting, printmaking, collage, sculpture, and installation, Tal R's oeuvre is characterised by bold colours, geometric patterns, and enigmatic imagery. His works often evoke a sense of mystery and nostalgia, inviting the viewer to tap into the artist's dreamlike world.

Tal R's rise to prominence began in the early 2000s, with solo exhibitions at institutions including the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark and the Camden Art Centre in London. His works have since been featured in numerous international exhibitions, including the São Paulo Biennial in 2002 and the Venice Biennale in 2003.

Between 2013-14, Tal R produced the Altstadt Girl painting series which explores the private and intimate spaces occupied by women—hotel rooms, bedrooms, and corridors. The series is characterised by a charged psychological intensity and a vibrant use of colour, drawing on art historical references such as Matisse, Bonnard, and Balthus. The process began with live sketches of strangers in confined settings, emphasising the tension of the exchange between artist and subject. Later, these sketches were transformed into vivid, abstracted compositions that blend figure and environment, reflecting the complexities of the psyche and cultural experience.

Tal R's contributions to Contemporary Art have been recognised with several awards, including the Carnegie Art Award in 2002, the Eckersberg Medal in 2005 and the the New Carlsberg Foundation's Artist Grant in 2016. He has also held teaching positions at institutions such as the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he was a professor from 2005 to 2014.
