Biography

Paul Wackers emerged as a significant figure in the Contemporary Art scene with his innovative approach to still life and interior compositions. Born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1978, Wackers' artistic journey began with formal training at the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, DC, where he earned his BFA. He further honed his skills at the San Francisco Art Institute, obtaining his MFA.

Wackers' work is characterised by an interplay between representation and abstraction. His paintings often feature shelves, window ledges, and interior spaces populated with an eclectic array of objects, plants, and abstract forms. This unique visual language has earned him recognition both nationally and internationally, with exhibitions spanning from New York to Brussels.

The artist's ability to create dynamic and complex visual environments has set him apart in the Contemporary Art world. His compositions venture into abstraction, inviting viewers to explore the boundaries between reality and imagination.

Wackers' artistic career gained momentum in the early 2000s, following his graduate studies. His distinctive style marries genre of still life with contemporary abstraction.

One of the hallmarks of Wackers' work is his use of vibrant colours and bold forms. His paintings often feature a riot of hues, from deep blues and greens to bright pinks and yellows. This colour palette, combined with his rendering of recognisable objects and abstract shapes, results in compositions that are at once familiar and otherworldly.

Wackers' approach to printmaking mirrors his broader artistic practice, characterised by a balance between the real and the abstract. In his 2017 etching Summer Haze, like many of his works, depicts a domestic scene, yet feels slightly removed from reality due to its abstracted arrangement and playful use of space. This print, like his broader work, reflects his exploration of everyday objects, questioning their place in both the physical and imagined worlds.

Wackers has exhibited extensively throughout his career. Notable solo exhibitions include The Space We Take at Eleanor Harwood Gallery in San Francisco (2021), In A House Of Shifting Forms at Alice Gallery in Brussels (2020), and Everything Energy at Jack Hanley Gallery East Hampton (2022). These exhibitions have showcased Wackers' evolving style and have cemented his position as a significant voice in contemporary painting.
