The News IV is a signed screen print in colours produced by the renowned American artist and designer, KAWS in 2017. The circular print depicts a close-up portion of a cartoon character’s face. A purple face is visible, as well as two large, round eyes and a round purple nose. KAWS covers the face with multi-coloured squiggles, obscuring the cartoon character’s facial features. The close-up abstracts the cartoon from its surroundings, encouraging the viewer to imagine what lies outside the frame.
The print is one of nine prints that compose The News collection. In this collection, KAWS produces nine prints that all privilege the close-up angle, as well as the use of bright and bold colours and a circular canvas. The collection was made at a point in KAWS’ artistic career in which he had become a prominent artist whose work was recognised all over the world. KAWS had developed a strong global following and had worked with prominent celebrities such as Kanye West and Pharrell Williams, as well as notable brands like Nike, Comme des Garcon and Uniqlo.
The News IV along with the other prints in the collection are more abstract than many of KAWS’ other prints, reflective of the artist’s visual experimentation which marked the works produced later in his artistic career.
