Lawyer is an inkjet print on a lenticular acrylic panel, released in an edition of 50 in 2014, and is the work of British artist Julian Opie. The subject matter of a figure walking side on has become a trademark of Opie’s and is as recognisable as Andy Warhol’s silkscreen depictions of Marilyn Monroe, or Keith Haring's barking dogs.
Lawyer depicts a woman side-on and mid step, her movement perceptible owing to the blurring and duplication of the lower portion of her legs and arms. The subject is wearing a formal suit and holding a bottle in her right hand. The colours used are monotone and detail has been kept to a minimum, with all idiosyncrasies stylistic considerations that are typical of Opie’s artistic output.
Figures portrayed mid-stride have become an iconic subject matter for Opie, reproduced on LED screens and billboards globally. Opie’s depiction of the quotidian and mundane perfectly portrays the modern world. On his representation of the everyday Opie states: “mundane things are just as exciting as all the things you might imagine escaping into.”
