This Is Shahnoza 4 is a signed screen print made by the acclaimed British artist Julian Opie in 2006. Coming in an edition size of 40 the print shows four female pole dancers wearing nothing but their underwear. The figures are rendered in Opie’s graphic style which is characterised by his use of simplified shapes and thick black outlines. None of the women have faces, another signature element of the artist’s visual language.
The print can be seen alongside a number of other artworks in Opie’s This Is Shahnoza series, all of which show the same female model in a variety of different poses and compositions. The model is often rendered nude or in her underwear and is always captured in motion, posing seductively or dancing. The collection of artworks developed out of Opie’s commission to create a mural for the Art Gallery of Ontario in 2006.
In order to create This Is Shahnoza 4 and the other prints in the collection Opie spent two days working with his model, Shahnoza and took over 1,000 photographs of her each day. Opie also used two video cameras to capture the model’s movements in real time, highlighting the artist’s fascination with motion and desire to create the illusion of movement and passing time in his artworks.
