Dogs Voices Silence is a signed digital print made by contemporary British artist Julian Opie in 2000. In this C-type print on paper made with perspex and LEDs, Opie depicts a natural landscape composed of a blue sky littered with fluffy white clouds against a plain of green trees and luscious green grass. The print was made by Opie taking a photograph of the natural scenery, scanning it onto a computer and altering it digitally. Opie managed to empty the composition of detail by blocking in areas of flat colour, as is seen in the sky and grass.
Dogs Voices Silence can be seen alongside Opie’s Eight Landscapes collection. The images in this collection are all based off photographs taken by Opie in a range of urban and natural environments. Opie used the same technique of uploading photographs to his computer and digitally altering them in these works as well. The title of Dogs Voices Silence refers to three sounds Opie heard while taking the photograph for the artwork. The other artworks in Opie’s Eight Landscapes collection are also all based off the sounds Opie heard at the time he took the photographs. In these artworks, Opie merges two kinds of language, visual and verbal.
Dogs Voices Silence represents a marked departure from Opie’s earlier works as the artist includes more detail in this work and makes references to sound, something he had not previously done.
