A luminary of 20th-century British abstract art, John Piper left an indelible legacy as an artist, writer, and designer. During World War II, Piper was appointed as an official war artist. He documented the impact of the war on the British landscape, and his emotive paintings of ruined buildings captured the destruction caused by the war but also the resilience of the British spirit. Throughout his career, Piper has displayed a fascination with historic architecture which led him to work as a set designer for theatre productions in London, and also saw him expand his artistic practice to include stained glass design in the 1950s and 60s. One of his most famous projects was the design of the stained-glass windows for the new Coventry Cathedral.
