Dean Stockton, known artistically as D*Face, was born in 1978 in London, where he developed an early fascination with art, drawing, and graffiti. He grew up surrounded by the influences of punk music, skateboarding, and American culture, which have shaped his artistic voice. D*Face's work embodies the ethos of the Contemporary Art movement, utilising various techniques including spray paint, stencils, and stickers.
From his initial forays into street art in the early 2000s, D*Face quickly gained recognition for his style that merges comic book aesthetics with biting social commentary. His art often features iconic imagery, such as the reimagined faces of celebrities and cultural symbols, presented in a playful yet critical manner. This blend of irreverence and depth has allowed D*Face to carve out a voice in the Contemporary Art world, leading to exhibitions across the globe.
D*Face's career began to flourish around 2005 when he began to showcase his work in galleries and public spaces. His art has been exhibited globally, including at the Saatchi Gallery in London and the Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles.
The artist’s printmaking exemplifies his rebellious and satirical approach to contemporary culture, blending Pop Art and Street Art influences. His 2009 screenprint More Punk Than You Punk (fluorescent pink), for instance, reimagines a classical portrait with subversive elements like chains, piercings, and cartoonish wings. The vibrant fluorescent pink background reinforces the irreverent tone, while drawing on punk's anti-establishment ethos. This work reflects D*Face’s broader practice by employing bold imagery, humour, and pop culture.
In addition to his gallery work, D*Face has collaborated with various brands and musicians, creating cover art for albums, including California by Blink-182 in 2016. This collaboration highlights his connection to pop-punk culture, merging his Street Art with the rebellious energy of the genre. Through music and commercial projects, D*Face has bridged the worlds of art, design, and pop culture.
